The Heesen
Story

In 1978, Frans Heesen founded a shipyard in the small Dutch city of Oss with a singular conviction: that the Netherlands could produce yachts to rival the best in the world. He began with fast aluminium boats — lean, precisely engineered craft that announced a new standard in semi-displacement performance.

Through the 1980s and 1990s, the yard evolved. Heesen expanded into displacement hulls without abandoning the aluminium expertise that had built its name. The shipyard became one of the first to deliver fully custom aluminium yachts under 500 GT — a segment where precision matters more than scale, and where every decision is visible in the finished vessel.

Today, Heesen is recognised as one of the most respected Dutch yacht builders in the world. The yard delivers yachts exceeding 50 metres, yet retains the character of a family-oriented shipyard where the engineering team knows every hull by name. Innovation remains central — from fast-displacement hull forms to hybrid propulsion systems — but it is always innovation in service of seamanship, never spectacle.

Speed, engineering precision, and Dutch craftsmanship. These are the three pillars on which every Heesen yacht is built — including UNEXPECTED.

Philosophy

Engineering Without
Compromise

Heesen does not build production boats. Every yacht that leaves Oss is a fully custom commission — designed, engineered, and finished by an in-house team of over 500 craftspeople.

01

Custom Builds Only

Every Heesen yacht is built to individual specification. There are no production moulds, no catalogue hulls — each vessel is a one-off commission tailored to its owner.

02

Aluminium Expertise

Aluminium hulls for displacement and ocean-crossing strength. Lightweight construction for speed and efficiency. Heesen masters every discipline under one roof.

03

In-House Engineering

Naval architecture, structural engineering, systems integration, and finishing are all performed by Heesen's own team — ensuring total control from first weld to final sea trial.

04

Seakeeping & Reliability

Dutch seafaring heritage runs deep. Heesen hulls are engineered for the North Sea and beyond — where comfort, stability, and mechanical reliability are not luxuries but necessities.

UNEXPECTED's
Heesen DNA

Every Heesen yacht carries the yard's signature: robust construction, proven mechanical systems, and a hull that inspires confidence in open water. UNEXPECTED is no exception.

Heesen Today

Now delivering fully custom yachts exceeding 50 metres, Heesen remains a family-oriented shipyard committed to Dutch craftsmanship. Over 200 yachts delivered and counting.

The Shipyard

Located in Oss, in the Noord-Brabant province of the Netherlands, the Heesen shipyard is a self-contained world of yacht construction. Multiple covered building halls allow simultaneous construction of several yachts in a climate-controlled environment.

Design, naval architecture, structural engineering, outfitting, and final finishing — all are performed in-house by a team of over 500 craftspeople. This vertical integration is rare in modern shipbuilding and gives Heesen total control over quality at every stage.

It is this environment — part laboratory, part atelier — from which UNEXPECTED emerged in 2001. Every frame, every weld, every system integration carries the mark of Oss.
